MELANIE DRIVE: THE DASTGIR ESTATE

65 SAREES • AUTHENTIC ART • ANTIQUE BOOKS • INTERNATIONAL TREASURES • SILVERPLATE • DESIGNER FINDS

Some estate sales are full of things. This one is full of stories.

Welcome to the Dastgir Estate on Melanie Drive, a remarkable home filled with a lifetime of travel, culture, collecting and extraordinary personal style.

And before we tell you about anything else, we need to talk about the sarees.

65 SAREES. YES, 65.

They are absolutely gorgeous.

Silks. Jewel tones. Rich embroidery. Gold detailing. Beautiful borders. Intricate patterns. Formal pieces. Brilliant color. Textiles that shimmer when they move and workmanship that simply doesn’t translate in photographs.

There are approximately 65 sarees in this collection, and they are among the stars of the sale.

Whether you wear sarees, collect textiles, sew, design, costume, create interiors or simply appreciate beautiful fabric, come early for these. Some are wonderfully elegant and understated. Others are spectacular.

And the sarees are only the beginning.

AN AUTHENTIC INTERNATIONAL ART COLLECTION

This home has walls worth studying.

The Dastgir collection includes authenticated art, Arabic and Islamic calligraphy, manuscript and miniature works, a magnificent large calligraphy textile panel, South Asian and Asian figural pieces, landscapes and traditional framed works.

There are pieces here that were collected because they meant something, not because they matched the sofa.

Collectors, decorators and culturally focused buyers should put this sale on their list.

A LIBRARY WITH A SURPRISE

Books fill the home, with an especially compelling collection centered on Islamic and Middle Eastern history, religion, art, architecture and culture.

You’ll find older leather and cloth-bound books, art volumes, vintage reference works, bound National Geographic collections, a vintage Times Atlas of the World, David Roberts’ Egypt, The Illustrated Qur’an, The Life of Mohammad, Islam: Art and Architecture and many more.

Among the most remarkable pieces is an ornately bound, centuries-old illustrated volume containing lithographs.

This isn’t a house where every old book gets thrown into a $2 box. There are books here worth opening.

CHINA, CRYSTAL & A BEAUTIFULLY SET TABLE

Open the cabinets.

You’ll find Reed & Barton flatware in its fitted chest, an ornate silverplate tea and coffee service, embossed and pierced serving pieces, trays, crystal stemware, cut glass and decorative porcelain.

There are beautiful china collections including pink floral pieces with gold rims, sophisticated ornamental patterns, blue-band floral serving ware and hand-painted pottery.

If you love entertaining, tablescapes, vintage china or simply believe dinner tastes better on a beautiful plate, there is plenty here for you.

OBJECTS FROM A LIFE OF TRAVEL

This is where Melanie Drive becomes a treasure hunt.

Decorative perfume and attar bottles. Inlaid boxes. Porcelain figures. Oxblood vases on carved stands. Calligraphy pieces. Decorative metalwork. Ceremonial-style curved knives and ornate scabbards. Presentation pieces. International objects. Unusual little things you may have to pick up and study before you even know what you’ve found.

Look inside the cabinets. Look on the shelves. Look twice.

FURNITURE • RUGS • CRYSTAL CHANDELIERS

The home also offers substantial glass-front display cabinets, a beautiful black lacquer Asian-style inlaid cabinet, traditional bedroom furnishings, shelving and other furniture.

Overhead, you’ll find crystal chandeliers, including a large traditional multi-arm chandelier and a striking chrome chandelier with crystal drops.

There is also a collection of patterned area rugs and runners waiting to be discovered.

CLOTHING • HANDBAGS • SHOES • TEXTILES

Beyond those 65 gorgeous sarees, there is a large wardrobe to shop.

Dresses, blouses, sweaters, jackets, blazers, coats, scarves, shoes, boots, embroidered garments and specialty textiles fill the clothing areas.

There are leather handbags and designer handbags, along with a packaged men’s cotton yukata made in Japan.

We have deliberately kept much of the everyday clothing estate-sale priced, because we’d rather see you leave carrying an armful than staring at a rack of boutique prices.

AND YES, THERE’S MORE

Luggage. Leather briefcases. Travel pieces. Scuba equipment. A massage/treatment table. Electronics. Office equipment. Decorative accessories. Glassware. Serving pieces. Collectibles.

The photos will not show you everything.

That’s part of the fun.
