An interesting collection of original photographs of Japan in the 19th century. European photographers dominated the early photographic business in Japan. With the closing of the Bakumatsu era, these photographers witnessed the end of Japan's feudal system and captured the swiftly vanishing scenes of the old way of life. Many of the photographs in this auction feature the work of Felice Beato, regarded as the father of photography in Japan, Raimund von Stillfried, an Austrian noble, as well as Japanese photographers such as Tamaura, Uchida, Kiuchi, Kioto Shashin-Kuwan, and numerous unidentified photographers who were trained by the Europeans in this new art form.
