Description & Details
A Lifetime of Culture, Craft, and Collecting: The Downsizing Estate of Dr. Welch, PhD
Born on a reservation in Montana and later relocated to Ohio through a government initiative, Dr. Welch, PhD, has lived a life defined by purpose, creativity, and global impact. A lifelong advocate for Indigenous rights and public health, she spent decades working with and for Tribal Nations across the United States. Along the way, she built a private collection of rare and authentic American Indian and Alaska Native artwork—including hand-crafted beadwork, silver and turquoise jewelry, ceremonial kachinas, and museum-worthy pieces sourced directly from the communities she served.
Dr. Welch is also an award-winning photographer with a deep reverence for nature. Her original prints capture extraordinary moments: bald eagles soaring over frozen rivers, spirited dog sled teams racing across snow-laden trails, and playful Alaskan bear cubs in their native habitat. These photographs, along with several traditional Alaskan wall-hanging masks and a remarkable 6.5-foot whale gill used by Alaska Natives for basket making, form the heart of this unique estate.
Her global journey continued to South Africa, where she served as a Kellogg Foundation Fellow helping reset the national health system after apartheid. While there, she photographed wild hippos and zebras, and acquired a stunning 6-foot-tall hand-carved giraffe—a statement piece radiating African heritage and artistry.
An accomplished woodworker, Dr. Welch handcrafted Adirondack rocking chairs from cedar and 2x4s, each meticulously stained and sealed. Her crowning achievement in craftsmanship is a 7-foot-long live-edge sweet gum table composed of three fused slabs, mounted on modern iron U-shaped legs with adjustable feet. This showpiece alone tells a story of natural beauty and artisan dedication.
