This is the "in home" sale for the estate of Arn Arnam, a longtime graphic artist for the Chicago Tribune. He worked there from the 1960's through the 1990's. There are literally thousands of books on design, decoration, WWII, architecture, international design, cultural topics, and so much more! Everything must go!

Asian Furniture

  1. A gorgeous large antique Chinese carved, painted red and gilt wood canopy from a wedding bed chamber, with detailed relief carved panels of central floral cartouche, flanked by two phoenixes and panels depicting flowers, auspicious objects such as Shou characters, a basket of peaches wishing longevity, cranes (known to mate for life) and pomegranates that connote blessings for many children and future generations. This is very finely carved, with elements highlighted with gold gilt. The two phoenixes together represent the male Feng and female Huang, symbolizing eternal love, peace, and harmony.
  2. Antique Japanese choba tansu (merchant's chest) originally made for shopkeepers and traders. Used to store documents, ledgers, and shop goods. Multiple graduated drawers and sliding compartments; hand-forged iron hardware. 48"W x 19"D x 67"H.
  3. A vintage Chinese medicine/herbs apothecary 4-drawer cabinet with red lacquer finish
  4. Antique Chinese eight-drawer scholar cabinet / document chest with hand-forged circular brass pull handles. 19"W x 19"D x 27-3/4"H.
  5. A beautiful antique two-section Japanese Mizuya Tansu, a kitchen or tea room chest, with hand forged iron hardware. In two sections, the upper portion has two sets of sliding doors with storage space behind each, and five side-by-side drawers along the lower part. The bottom section has 2 sliding doors with spacious storage with shelving behind. The top cabinet measures 74”W x 20-1/4”D x 39”H and the lower cabinet measures 74”W x 20-1/4”D x 28”H. Likely Meiji Period: (1880-1900). These chests are also known as daidokoro todana (kitchen shelves).
