Shirley Harris was born on a small farm in Dooms, Virginia in 1942, where her lifelong love of nature and animals first took root. She spent her life rescuing creatures — from iguanas to her cherished blue‑and‑gold macaw, who she had for forty‑three years.

She loved antiquing with her daughter, researching her family's ancestry, and tending to her garden, pond, and the English bulldog who was never far from her side. One of her proudest moments was receiving the Hillandale Home & Garden Award in 2015.

After retiring from the school system, she continued to pour her heart into helping others, volunteering with hospice and local nursing homes, supporting individuals living with dementia and Alzheimer's. Shirley was, at her core a helper and loved making a difference in the lives of people she touched.
