Description & Details

Portions of the Estate of Lulu Cameron, her painting studio and antiques store, plus the collection of Marisa Gaggino, owner of the former HeritageCo2 Architectural Artifacts, longtime friends and Royal Oak retailers, together for one last show.

Marisa and Lulu's both opened their Royal Oak stores in 1992. In those days Royal Oak had 21 antiques stores and Detroit was a wild west of abandoned buildings and clandestine art happenings.Lulu made art and social statements from found emphemera, Marisa spelunked for historic building parts.

They bonded over primitive and folk art, anatomical and religious matter,  garbage night, anything French, wine and cigarettes. Lulu had an eye for tiny objects, Marisa for heavy metal. In their 30 year friendship they did shows and garage sales together, traveled to France and hosted joint trunk shows out of overstuffed suitcases. It is only fitting that they close this chapter together.

Marisa remodelled an abandoned warehouse on the tracks at Lincoln and Main in 1997 and turned it into a retail showroom using historic salvage. She proved her point that you could take a nothing structure and create a remarkable building. Her inventory expanded to include all manner of salvage from industrial to bowling alleys, tobacco shops and girl scout camps. She sold props for movies and restaurants, industrial, medical and crime scene oddities, vintage furniture, garden and found objects.

Lulu, her stores and studio will be remembered as gathering places and safe haven for both young and old, aspiring creatives and fringe characters. She was a beloved and prolific artist of 60 years and many talents, a renowned expert on antique buttons and a curator and connoisseur of beautiful and unusual objects.
