Description & Details

Original Haitian Paintings from the Collection of Yvonne and Glenn Stokes.

The Stokes' started collecting Haitian paintings in 1956, on their first trip to Haiti. Glenn Stokes had a pest control company (Interamerican Pest Control). He went to Haiti and other Caribbean Islands including the ABC Islands and Puerto Rico every month for thirty some years doing pest control. He did very large dry wood termite tent fumigations. He also fumigated the grain ships in the Dominican Republic Yvonne frequently accompanied him.

He collected Haitian paintings on virtually every trip. He met with some of the original Haitian artists. He collected paintings directly from St. Pierre Toussaint and Philome Obin. Glenn and Yvonne fell in love with Haiti and would often spend Christmases there with their children. His collection is probably the largest Haitian collection ever assembled with over 3,500 pieces from over 730 Haitian different artists.

As we are getting older we would like to spread some of our Haitian paintings with all of the people who love Haitian Art and/or support present Haitian artists, who are in dire need now. This auction is one of many that will be held in future years. If anyone wants a paintings from a special painter or a special subject, please get in touch with us.
Keep tuned for the second part of the auction.
