The Life & Legacy of Betty Gaustad

The incredible collection before you is the culmination of a truly singular, fiercely independent life. Born on a Minnesota farm as the eldest of six siblings, Betty Gaustad struck out for Southern California at eighteen. She put herself through college while working as Alice in Wonderland at Disneyland, performing as an original Mouseketeer, singing in the Troubadours, and even serving as Lucille Ball’s private flight attendant. She soon became a stewardess for United Airlines during the strict golden age of aviation. When she welcomed her daughter in 1968, she bought a home in California, relocated her mother and siblings, and supported them through college. Together, the family celebrated a generational graduation featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, banding together to help raise her daughter while Betty flew. Looking down from the cockpit window on her regular Seattle-to-San Francisco route, Betty fell in love with the landscape of Southern Oregon. In 1974, she purchased a 90-acre ranch in SunnyValley. She quickly established herself in the regional market—working as a bankruptcy court antique appraiser, partnering in a Grants Pass furniture auction house, and opening Bell’s Antiques.

In 1978, Betty founded the Covered Bridge Country Store & Antiques in Sunny Valley, which famously served as a secluded, hospitable summer stopover for members of The Grateful Dead.

Over the next four decades, she expanded her footprint along the Applegate Trail, The Covered Bridge Store & Gas Station: The essential grocery hub and gathering spot for the Sunny Valley community for 47 years.

The Applegate Wagon Trail Interpretive Center: Built alongside her daughter and brother on the historic 1846 stage stop grounds to preserve the heritage of the southern route of the Oregon Trail.

The Applegate Trail Café: Converted from a former Mobil station across the freeway to serve local travelers and neighbors alike.

Known affectionately as the unofficial "Mayor" of Sunny Valley, Betty’s life was defined by deep community devotion and tireless resilience in the face of immense challenges—rebuilding after devastating structure fires, facing repeated burglaries, and pouring every ounce of energy into her vision.

Now 83 and resting in memory care, the liquidation of her treasured, lifelong collection directly supports her comfort and continued care.
