Sumida Gawa Pottery: A Journey Through Art and Time
Sumida pottery is a unique Japanese ceramic art form, originally created for export between the late 1800s and the start of World War II. Following the war, the tradition was revived and continues to captivate collectors today.
Named after the Sumida River, which flows past the historic Asakusa pottery district near Tokyo, Sumida pottery is known for its striking designs, characterized by robust clay bodies adorned with intricate relief figures.
The Legacy of Ryosai Potters: The story of Sumida pottery begins with Seto potter Ryosai I, who pioneered a distinctive style blending flowing glazes with applied relief elements. Active in Tokyo from 1875 to 1900, Ryosai I left a legacy that his family would carry forward. His son, Ryosai II (b. 1860), refined and expanded on his father’s techniques. Later, Ryosai III (1888–1971) relocated the family’s operations to Yokohama in 1924, ensuring Sumida pottery’s continued evolution.
Other notable potters such as Hara Gozan, Ishiguro Koko, and Sezan also contributed to the rich tradition of Sumida pottery, each adding their unique artistry to this celebrated craft.
Sumida Gawa: A Different Tradition, distinct from Sumida ware, Sumida Gawa refers to a softer raku-style pottery produced in the early 1800s. The term “gawa” translates to “river” in Japanese, highlighting its connection to the Sumida River.
Not to Be Confused: While Sumida pottery holds its own distinct identity, it is often mistaken for other styles like Banko ware, Korean ware, or even the work of Chinese potter Poo You-she, known for his Poo Ware. However, each of these traditions reflects a different artistic heritage.
Sumida pottery’s bold forms and dynamic designs remain a testament to the creativity and craftsmanship of its makers, ensuring its place as a cherished collectible across the globe.
