Mother-of-pearl inlay, using the nacreous layer of mollusks, has a rich history, in their furniture and other decorative items across various cultures and time periods. In the 1960s, mother-of-pearl inlay was used to create decorative accents on furniture, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication. Craftsmen would cut and shape mother-of-pearl pieces, inlay them into wood, and then polish and varnish the surface. 1960s Japanese mother-of-pearl inlaid furniture was unique due to its masterful craftsmanship, durable quality, and opulent aesthetic, featuring intricate designs and a shimmering appearance created by iridescent shells.
