In the late 1960s, in Rockwall, Texas, a young girl named Cathey set off on an adventure from Clark Street to Jackson Street, excited to visit her friends in the neighborhood. Unbeknownst to her, this day would create an unforgettable memory, revolving around a simple yet remarkable cake plate.
A Peek Through the Screen
Upon arriving, Cathey knocked on the door and peered through the screen. Her gaze fell upon something familiar and welcoming—the aluminum dome of Miss Eva's cake plate. This cake plate, shining under the light, was more than just a kitchen item; it held a treasure trove of memories for Miss Eva’s children, Debbie and Ricky.
A Tempting Discovery
Though no one answered her knock, Cathey sensed something delightful hidden beneath the dome. Curiosity got the better of her, and she cautiously opened the screen door and approached the counter. Lifting the lid with care, she discovered a rich German chocolate pound cake waiting for her.
"Hello? Is anyone home?" she called out once more, but the house remained quiet.
A Sneaky Slice
Overcome by temptation, Cathey cut a small slice and relished the taste of the delicious cake. After wiping her fingers clean, she carefully replaced the dome and left the house, but soon the weight of guilt settled heavily on her heart.
A Heartfelt Confession
Later, Cathey returned to the home, admitting her cheeky act of taking a slice. Her honesty was met with compassion and forgiveness.
A New Chapter Begins
Years later, while assisting Miss Eva’s children with her estate sale, I noticed that same iconic aluminum dome. Ricky shared how their mother frequently used this plate to deliver cakes. They reminisced about its presence at countless events, from "get well soon" gifts to baby showers and church celebrations. Before the sale, Cathey visited the estate sale and concluded her tour in the kitchen with Debbie. As they stood before the aluminum cake dome, Cathey recounted the tale of her sneaky slice. Deeply touched by the nostalgia, she felt honored to take ownership of the cake plate and dome.
