Description & Details
DID YOU KNOW…
There is a subcontinental divide in Wisconsin and it’s about 6 minutes south of our sale. (Bark Lake) If you don’t know much about a subcontinental divide-it is a major drainage divide that separates two of North America’s largest watersheds:
To the east: Water flows into Lake Michigan, then to the Great Lakes, down the St. Lawrence River, and into the Atlantic Ocean.
To the west: Water flows into the Mississippi River, eventually reaching the Gulf of Mexico.
In simple terms: rain that falls on one side of the divide in Richfield could end up in the Atlantic Ocean, while rain just a few feet away on the other side might flow all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.
This is important because it affects storm water drainage, groundwater protection, and even sewage treatment systems. It also markets a hydrologic boundary.
This is cool because…..
In Richfield, you can literally straddle the line where water decides which ocean to flow into. (It's like standing on a natural continental fork in the road)! It's Rare, Often Overlooked, and Only a few places in the U.S. have such clear divides. Richfield's is relatively accessible and unspoiled.
If you are into it as much as I am, here is further cool geological information about Richfield you probably didn’t know about: https://www.richfieldwi.gov/DocumentCenter/View/942/7-ag-nat-cultural-resources?bidId=
